Craig Yarger Professor Jenna Copper E-Lit1050-A October 19, 2016 Poe’s Love and Death; One in the Same The significance of Edgar Allan Poe s style of writing, which commands the use of both death and love most frequently throughout his works, are what really made his literary works become so well known. The nature of death and on questions about the afterlife is usually Poe’s main focus in most of his literary works. A woman who has died at the height of her youth and beauty, leaving a lover behind to mourn. Death and Love, these two main themes are discussed throughout Edgar Allan Poe s literary work in his lifetime. These themes are displayed by Poe in his works The Cask of Amontillado as well as Annabel Lee. Poe does not necessarily come to the same conclusion about death in each of his works. Also, Poe s use of love in many cases, parallels the female in question and Poe s sickly and prematurely deceased wife Virginia Clemm. Poe seems to take different stances on both death and love between works changing his outlook on each of the topics. In The Cask of Amontillado Poe use s death as a tool for seeking revenge. Whereas in Annabel Lee Poe uses death to bring out the true beauty of an individual. But, in most cases both of these themes are present in Poe s works just altering in form and meaning.
